The medical methods require the assistance of medical means or professionals and include sterilizationâsevering the tubes that carry sperm (vasectomy), or in which the sperm and egg meet (tubal ligation), and abortion (ending a pregnancy via chemicals or surgery). Although many abortions are used as birth control, abortion is by no means a contraceptive and should not be considered as such.
Pregnancy
If you think you might be pregnant, remember to keep breathing. They are called pregnancy scares for a reason.
If it has been less than three days, emergency contraception can reduce the risk of pregnancy.7 The chances of it working successfully drop with every day that passes, but emergency contraceptive pills can be obtained from your doctor, many pharmacies, emergency rooms, and health clinics. Depending on your age and location, a prescription may be needed. Even after emergency contraception is taken, a pregnancy test should still be done.
Reliable, name-brand pregnancy tests can be found in your doctorâs office, in clinics such as Planned Parenthood, and most any drugstore. If you are in a position to be taking a pregnancy test at home, buy two at the store (in case you mess up the first one), pay attention to the instructions and the expiration dates, and it might help to have someone with you.
If you have a negative pregnancy test (ânot pregnantâ), but it has been less than three weeks since the risk event or you have definitely missed a period, another test should be taken (do not reuse a test). Also, you should make an appointment with your doctor or local health clinic within the next week.
If you have a positive pregnancy test (âpregnantâ), you should schedule a visit to your doctor to verify the results as soon as possible. And breathe.
If you find out after testing that you are pregnant, you may be tempted to judge or shame yourself. That energy would be better used finding support and information about options including abortion, adoption, and parenthood.
If you think you might be or find out you are pregnant:
Tell at least one supportive adult in your life.
